I've been interested in this game for a long time now but dont know a thing about it. I guess the biggest reason I never got into it is because I never see anyone playing it. So here's a few questions for those of you more knowledged in this game.
Is the amount of people playing this game pretty decent?
Do you plan on supporting this game to a high degree in your store?
How do you like the way the game plays?
How does it compair to Warhammer? I love the way WHF uses blocks of units, it really makes you think about all your actions and movement, is this more simplified? I'm not too big of a fan of simplified games.
Is Hordes and Warmachine the same game just differant factions?
Know any good books with game world fluff to give me an idea about each faction?
Thanks for any help
Josh Austin
Thanks for the indepth responce Matt. It really looks like a good game. I think I'll give it a shot when your store launchs. I was checking out their website and Circle Orboros really caught my eye, but the Retribution unit with the sword and hand crossbow just looks fantastic. Decisions, decisions... I think I'll look around on some forums and see what the word on the street is about each army.
Thanks again.
I'm leaning towards either a Pirate Mercenaries army for Warmachine or Legion of Everblight for Hordes. I love those Press Gangers models, the one even had a guy stuffed in a sack, slung over his back. Top knotch models. Sep 4th is too far away!
I have a Circle squad that I'll be keeping in the store that you could borrow to play around with.
We're going to try to have a small demo army for most of the games we support so that people can 'try before they buy'. For Warmachine we'll probably have Cygnar and Khador and for Hordes we'll have Circle and another (probably Trolls).
I have a Pirate Mercenary army Josh. They're a bit tricky to play, but the models are gorgeous and they work pretty well when you get the hang of their playstyle.
I also play:
Cygnar
Cryx
Skorne
I have a sizable Khador army and a few Circle pieces as well. The game is absolutely different than Fantasy or 40k. There are a lot more move options, the turns are set up completely differently, and each army is centered around the warcaster to a much larger degree than a general/HQ in Fantasy/40k.
I looked a bit at the new rules and I think a lot of the older players will come back to the game when it is revamped. The models are all gorgeous and fun to paint and each of the armies has some great fluff to it. I would absolutely play a few games with whoever is interested once the store is open.
I'm holding you to that when I buy my first Warmachine/Hordes army!
Hey Josh... what's your status for WMHD ? Have you picked anything up yet ?
Hey Joe. I havent gotten around to picking any up yet unfortunatly. With the new edition of warhammer fantasy out, all my hobby time has been spent on that. Do you guys have a steady group of Warmachine players around your way? I might pick up a box or two and try it out soon.
Working on Fantasy myself right now - building a Tomb Kings army. As for the WMHD group we have a fair number of Veterans, and many new players joining...
Great to hear you're getting into fantasy man. The new edition has been my favorite yet. Have you read up on the Tomb Kings rumors? They sound awesome... I cant wait to have my High lich priest flying around on a Rok :) And a walking bone giant bolt thrower? badass... It was actually our conversation at mideivel times that got me interested in TK. 3000pts later... haha.
Warmachine (and Hordes) is a great game. At one point, there were a lot of players, but support waned a bit and it died off. Privateer Press is going to be releasing a new version of the rules, correcting some of the major issues with the game but leaving most of the core rules intact.
This is one of the games we would really like to support and promote. It is a lot of fun, and is different enough from Warhammer and 40k that I don't think it will detract from them at all. I play Circle Orboros, and I am seriously considering picking up a Retribution army. My brothers play Khador and Cygnar.
The game plays very differently than Warhammer. Unit size is typically smaller and move like Warhammer's skirmishers. Many units (especially 'Jacks and Warbeasts) have a number of different options when attacking. It is definitely not 'simple', but it is very different. A good way to look at it is that Warhammer is more strategical, while Warmachine is more tactical. Many of the important decisions in Warhammer are made before the game begins. In Warmachine/Hordes the important decisions all happen at the table.
Hordes and Warmachine can be played against one another and the core rules are identical. However, there are some major differences in how 'Jacks/Warcasters work compared to 'Beasts/Warlocks. The biggest difference is resource management. Warcasters have a set value of 'Focus' they can generate to power their Warjacks and their own special abilities. Warbeasts generate Rage, which their Warlocks leech off of to power their special abilities.
There is a lot of game fluff out there (especially since the game started out as a RPG setting), but I would say Prime and Primal (the core rulebooks for Warmachine and Hordes) are good places to start. If you want, I can lend you my copy of Primal, but I will have to get my copy of Prime back from my brother.
Matthew.
